Why FRP Grating Is Ideal for Food Processing Plant Washdown Zones

Food processing plants live and die by their cleaning regime. Every production surface — floor, drain, walkway — gets hit with high-pressure hot water, chlorinated sanitizers, and peroxyacid foams on a daily basis. The flooring material has to survive that, keep workers from slipping, and not become a bacteria reservoir in the process.

That's a narrow spec list, and steel grating fails most of it.

Why steel fails in food plants

Galvanized steel gratings shed their zinc layer under acidic wash chemicals within 12–18 months. Once the zinc is gone, the underlying steel pits. Pits trap organic material and become impossible to fully sanitize — auditors flag them, and bacteria counts rise. Aluminum holds up better against corrosion but loses its slip-resistance profile quickly under hot wash, and the bare-edges of cut aluminum panels oxidize visibly within months.

Stainless steel (typically 304 or 316) works in some applications but is expensive, heavy, and still shows tea-staining and crevice corrosion in washdown zones after a few years.

What FRP gives you instead

Chemical resistance. Isophthalic polyester handles chlorine concentrations up to ~10% and most common sanitizing acids at typical service temperatures. For peroxyacetic acid and higher-temperature CIP (clean-in-place) wash zones, vinyl ester is the right upgrade.

Hygienic surface. FRP grating is a single molded or pultruded panel with no welded joints, no fasteners on the walking surface, and no place where for organic material to lodge. The grit surface is integral to the panel — it cannot flake off.

Slip resistance. The standard fine or coarse quartz-grit top surface delivers a Coefficient of Friction well above OSHA's 0.5 threshold, even when wet with oil, fat, or detergent residue. That matters in processing areas where a worker in boots is the highest fall-risk profile on the floor.

Weight. Pultruded FRP at 25 mm is around 12 kg/m². That makes panel removal for drain cleaning a one-person job rather than a two-person lift with a forklift.

Drainage. The standard 38 mm mesh opening gives roughly 70% open area, which is what you want under processing lines where the floor gets hosed down continuously and water needs to drain fast.

Standards to reference in the spec

  • ASTM D638 / D790 — tensile and flexural strength of the grating
  • ASTM C581 — chemical resistance of the resin system in the specific chemicals
  • NSF/ANSI 51 — for any FRP material that contacts food (FRP grating is normally a non-contact application, but the spec drives resin selection)
  • OSHA 1910.22 — walking-working surfaces, slip resistance

What it doesn't replace

FRP grating is not a substitute for the sealed, sloped, drainable flooring directly under processing equipment — that's a urethane or epoxy mortar system. FRP fills the walkways, the access platforms above drains, and the trench covers around the perimeter.

Bottom line

In food processing, the cost of a flooring failure isn't the replacement — it's the audit finding, the bacterial count spike, or the slip incident. FRP grating's combination of chemical resistance, slip rating, and cleanability is what the daily washdown actually requires.
