Why Pulp and Paper Mills Specify FRP Grating for Wet and Chemical Service

Pulp and paper mills are consistently rated among the most aggressive chemical service environments in heavy industry. The kraft process alone circulates white liquor (NaOH + Na₂S at pH 13+), green liquor, and black liquor through every part of the recovery cycle. Bleaching plants add chlorine dioxide, peroxide, and ozone to that list. The walking surfaces around this equipment have to survive continuous chemical splash, high humidity, and operating temperatures that regularly exceed 70 °C in the digester area.

This is the environment FRP was designed for. It's also where FRP delivers its most one-sided lifecycle cost advantage.

The stainless steel trap

For decades the conservative spec was 316L stainless steel grating. It works — until it doesn't. In bleach plant service, 316L shows measurable crevice attack and pitting within 5–8 years, particularly around the welded cross-bars that grating manufacturers use. In digester and brown stock washer areas, chloride stress corrosion cracking is a documented failure mode at the bracket connections.

Replacement is the expensive part. Stainless steel grating costs 3–4× equivalent FRP, weighs roughly 3× as much, and the installation in an operating mill typically requires shutdown coordination. Whatever you saved by using the "premium" material you pay back when the changeout happens.

What vinyl-ester FRP actually does here

A properly manufactured vinyl-ester FRP grating panel — tested to ASTM C581 in white liquor, black liquor, and ClO₂ at service temperature — delivers a service life that exceeds 20 years in pulp mill service with negligible maintenance.

That number is not aspirational. It's been demonstrated across multiple North American mills since the 1990s and is the basis for most major mills' current walkway specs.

The other advantage is installation. A 38 mm pultruded FRP panel at roughly 12 kg/m² is a one- or two-person lift. Equivalent galvanized steel grating is a 35–40 kg/m² lift that needs two people and a plan to get it into position. Over a multi-thousand-square-meter walkway, the labor delta is significant.

Where it goes in the mill

  • Digester building walkways — high temperature, white liquor splash
  • Brown stock washers — wet, slippery, brown liquor splash
  • Bleach plant — ClO₂, peroxide, acid stages; the most aggressive chemical service
  • Recovery boiler area — hot, humid, occasional smelt spills
  • Stock preparation — generally milder but consistently wet

Resin and construction details

Vinyl ester is the only correct resin choice for bleach plant and digester areas. Isophthalic polyester is fine for stock preparation and paper machine areas where chemical exposure is more modest.

For bleach plant specifically, look for resin systems tested in ClO₂ at 5% concentration and 50 °C. That combination rules out most polyester systems and a meaningful number of "vinyl ester" formulations that are actually vinyl-ester hybrids with too much polyester content to survive long-term bleach exposure.

Moulded grating is the right construction for most pulp mill service — it gives better bi-directional strength for the partial panels around equipment. Pultruded grating is reserved for long-span applications like clarifier launders or recovery boiler decks.

Standards to reference

  • ASTM C581 — chemical resistance at service temperature
  • ASTM E84 — flame spread (typically Class 1 required)
  • ASTM D638 / D790 — strength properties
  • ASTM F3055 — grating integrity and load rating
  • NSF/ANSI 61 — for any grating over process water or near potable water service

Bottom line

Pulp and paper mills were the early proving ground for vinyl-ester FRP grating and remain the cleanest example of its lifecycle advantage. The combination of chemical resistance, weight, and installed cost is hard to beat with any metallic alternative, and the operational experience base is now deep enough that the spec decision is essentially standard.
